Cirencester is the Capital of the Cotswolds, ideally sited for exploring the local countryside and villages. And The Fleece, a recently renovated pub and hotel in the town centre, proved to be the perfect base for a short break in the Cotswolds.

A Historic Hotel
Two things immediately strike you about The Fleece. The first is its very convenient location, overlooking the Market Place in the heart of Cirencester. And the second is that it is housed in a picturesque historic building, with a half-timbered frontage flanked by 18th century additions. This was once a coaching inn but has now been restored as a comfortable pub with rooms and modern conveniences.
The building’s history goes back to the 17th century, and it is said that King Charles II once used the inn as a refuge. But the restoration has brought the interior right up to date and it is tastefully – and sometimes quirkily – furnished throughout. The design is mostly animal themed and, as befits a town whose prosperity was once derived from wool, sheep make a frequent appearance!
There are several different spaces for eating and drinking, and in good weather there is a small outside seating area. And the hotel’s friendly staff complete the welcoming experience.
Comfortable Bedrooms
The winding corridors and stairways remind you that you are in an old inn. But the bedrooms have all the modern amenities that you would expect. Our room, with its rustic décor, was comfortable and had everything we needed, including a coffee machine and a fridge. A hairdryer, iron and ironing board were also supplied.
The room had a small desk and seating area. And it looked out over the market place. Better still, and unusually for such a central location, it was quiet, both late at night and early in the morning. (Of course, it might be a bit different if you are there on market day!)
Eating And Drinking At The Fleece In Cirencester
I ate in the cosy dining room, watched over by portraits of two kings: Charles I and Charles II. The menu had a good mixture of pub classics, including Caesar salad and shepherd’s pie, and a range of steaks and burgers. There were two vegetarian main meals, as well as an onion bhaji burger.
Everything was attractively presented, and I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of alcohol-free wine on the drinks list. There was also a good choice on the breakfast menu, including a vegetarian grill.
The bar is popular with both guests and locals, but with several different rooms you can always find a hiding place. This is a Daniel Thwaites pub so you can choose from a selection of cask ales as well as a full range of wines and spirits and a tempting cocktail menu.
Making The Most Of Your Stay
Whether you’re staying for one night or a little longer, you will find plenty to see and do in Cirencester. Wander the medieval streets, explore the independent shops and visit the remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in England. And be sure to spend some time exploring the rolling hills and pretty villages of the Cotswolds.
