One of many reasons for visiting the Cinque Terre is to walk the many footpaths between the villages. For a quiet and lesser known walk try the Sanctuaries Path, a trail that links the five shrines, or sanctuaries, that guard the villages from the hilltops. These include the church of Nostra Signora Delle Grazie at San Bernardino, close to Corniglia.

Nostra Signora delle Grazie, San Bernardino

The church of Nostra Signora delle Grazie overlooks the village of Corniglia in the Cinque Terre

Each shrine is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Nostra Signora delle Grazie in San Bernardino was built in the 19th century on the site of a medieval chapel and looks down over the village of Corniglia and across to the sea.

We didn’t visit all of the sanctuaries, choosing instead to walk to San Bernardino from nearby Vernazza, a peaceful morning walk through farmland and fruit groves that got us back to Vernazza in time for a lunch of fresh fish and local wine.
