There are so many reasons to visit Avebury. To explore some of the country’s most famous prehistoric monuments, including the largest stone circle in Europe. To relax in a peaceful Wiltshire village, or hike in the countryside. Or perhaps to discover the historic cities, country houses and other attractions that are so abundant in this part of the country. Longstones Avebury, a collection of beautifully converted self-catering barns, proved to be the ideal base for a luxury getaway in the heart of the World Heritage Site.

A Luxury Barn Conversion
Longstones Avebury is set on a working farm in Avebury Trusloe, a hamlet just outside the heart of Avebury village. Six barns – some newly built, others fully renovated – have been transformed into luxury accommodation for visitors. Set around a landscaped courtyard, each barn is named after a local landmark, such as Windmill Hill or Ridgeway, a homage to the ancient landscape.
The setting is idyllic: a family farm surrounded by tranquil countryside, just a short walk across the fields to Avebury. You can visit the stone circle at dawn or dusk, to avoid the daytime crowds and experience the site at its most atmospheric. But, despite its rural seclusion, Longstones is easily accessible and perfectly placed for exploring everything that Wiltshire has to offer.
Stylish Interiors And Modern Amenities
Step inside any of the barns and you’ll find Scandinavian-inspired interiors, with earthy tones, soft textures, and clean architectural lines. Each space is individually styled, but you can expect to find a mix of rustic charm and modern luxury.
I stayed in Kennet, one of the original barns. This has now been adapted to accommodate two guests, with separate sleeping and living areas. The spacious living area had comfortable seating, alongside a fully equipped kitchen with oven, microwave, coffee machine, and tea and coffee – all the essentials for a self-catered stay.
A Place To Relax In
If you’re looking forward to a cosy night in, you can light the wood burner and unwind with the TV and a selection of board games. And – if you really want to indulge yourself – there is a freestanding bath right beside the bed!
Each barn has a private patio with tables and chairs, perfect for al fresco dining or simply lingering with a book and a glass of wine. Practical facilities include a sheltered carport with EV charging points and access to washing machines. Everything is designed to enable a stay that is as long or short, as active or relaxed, as you choose.
Staying At Longstones Avebury
Longstones is within the Avebury World Heritage Site, a landscape rich in Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments. Within easy walking distance are the Avebury stone circle and West Kennet Avenue, and there are several other sites a little further away. And the enigmatic Silbury Hill rises mysteriously in the distance.
Avebury itself is a charming village with a thatched pub, manor house, and a small community shop. There are opportunities for hiking, and the long distance Ridgeway path begins just a few miles away. You can while away a morning in the nearby town of Marlborough, or venture further afield – Stonehenge, the Cotswolds, and the city of Bath are all within easy reach.
